The Difference Between Kitchen & Bathroom Tiles
Kitchens: There is a big difference in tile installations for kitchens and bathrooms. For kitchens, you need tiles that are resistant to heavy traffic. Ceramic tiles are best, so are natural stones and porcelain. For backsplashes, choose tiles that are stain-resistant and easy to wipe clean. You can choose slippery tiles for the backsplash but they must be moisture-resistant.
Bathrooms: Bathroom tiles need to be anti-slip and water-resistant. Bathrooms are more humid than kitchens, so it’s important to select tiles that prevent accidents and protect the foundation of your home. Ceramic, natural stone, porcelain, and mosaic are best for bathrooms.
For tile application, there are a few other things you should know:
● Tiles need to be installed on a flat, smooth surface or else they will come off or crack over the years.
● Ceramic tiles are the most cost-effective and offer the best variety. Porcelain tiles are priced higher but they are also more durable and better suited for high traffic areas. They are available in larger sizes, up to two square feet each.
● Natural stone and marble are porous and far more expensive. They are also more challenging to work with. Make sure you hire expert professionals for installations.
● Tiles can be sharp-edged or bullnose, which is rounded on one edge or double bullnose, that is rounded on both sides.
● Mosaic tiles are smaller and more decorative. They come with pre-made cloth backing so they are easier to install.
● Finger tiles (or Listellos as the Italians say), are small, narrow, short and best used to create decorative patterns in high-end installations.
● Wall tiles are thinner, lighter and smaller. They are prone to cracking and don't withstand temperature changes as well.
● Tiles are easy to apply. Tile cement is created by adding water to premixed water to stick the tiles to walls and floors. To fill in gaps between the tiles, powdered cement called grout is used.
● Neutral coloured tiles are currently the trend. Beige and grey are the most popular choices.
● Tiles need not always be glossy. Consider matte finishes for a sophisticated, contemporary look that doesn’t smudge or watermark as easily as glossy tiles do.
● Graphic patterns add a creative touch that brings more character to your home.
